The Smart Mover's Checklist

1 month prior to moving into new apartment

  • Obtain and complete a Change-of-Address kit from the post office. Notify others about your address change including the following:
    • Family and friends
    • Creditors
    • Insurance companies
    • Current Landlord
    • Magazine Subscriptions
  • Contact your insurance carriers to change information regarding policies (i.e.: auto, renter, medical, etc.)
  • Contact your bank to arrange account transfers and order checks with new address information.
  • Get out of the apartment.
  • If applicable, contact service providers (health care providers, gyms, sports venues, etc) about referrals or termination of contracts.
  • Collect important records, including medical, dental, school, financial, legal, veterinary, and family records.
  • Schedule disconnection of old utility service and connection of new (if applicable) including the following:
    • Gas & Electric
    • Cable (return cable box if one was issued)
    • Internet
    • Telephone/Cell phone
    • Water
  • Arrange for rental of moving truck or moving service.
  • Cancel any magazine and newspaper subscriptions you do not want to transfer.
  • Return any materials borrowed from community libraries and neighbors.
  • Obtain packing materials needed for move, such as boxes, tape, wrapping materials, etc.
  • Start to pack less-used items such as seasonal clothing and decorations, books, pictures, etc.
  • Use up any perishable foods and products that will not be moved.
  • Hold a moving sale of any items you want to get rid of.
  • Arrange for storage facilities if you plan to store any contents during, or after, move.
  • Arrange for special moving day transportation of children, animals and plants.

1 Week prior to moving into new apartment

  • Arrange all important documents to be stored in one place prior to move.
  • Have your car serviced in preparation for move.
  • Disassemble electronics and other items.
  • Settle any accounts with local businesses, including picking up any dry cleaning and laundry.
  • Start to pack most items.

1 day prior to moving into new apartment

  • Defrost and clean out refrigerator and freezer.
  • Clean kitchen appliances.
  • Disconnect major appliances to make ready for move.
  • Disassemble furniture.
  • Pack all other items.
  • If using a mover, all household items should be packed.
  • Take down window fixtures and curtains.
  • Pack a box of first things needed in new apartment.

Moving Day

  • Note utility meter readings
  • Move all boxes and items into moving vehicle or supervise moving company, making sure all instructions are understood and boxes are clearly marked for delivery.
  • If using a mover, read inventory and all paperwork carefully. Make sure driver has correct directions and address. Store copies of all paperwork somewhere safe.
  • Clean home.
  • Check all rooms to make sure all items have been accounted for and that everything has been cleaned.
  • Set thermostat, turn off all appropriate appliances and make sure all windows and doors are locked.

Arrival Day

  • Move items into apartment, noting which boxes go where.
  • If using a moving company, supervise crew on location of boxes and items.
  • Begin unpacking, starting with basic items first. If using a moving company, review your inventory, noting any damages.
  • Make sure all utilities are on and in working order.
  • Return moving vehicle after move.

After Move

  • Examine all items moved to make sure everything was delivered.
  • Sweep, vacuum and clean after move.
  • Introduce yourself to your new neighbors and apartment staff.
  • Go out and explore your new area.
